GSRA, dist panels to implement victim compensation

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GRSA) and various district road safety committees will implement and evaluate the compensation scheme for victims of hit and run cases.In reply to a question in Parliament, the Union govt said that under the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022, respective state road safety councils and district road safety committees are "empowered to evaluate the implementation of the scheme and take corrective steps, wherever necessary. Similarly, the State Road Safety Council may take similar steps for implementation of the scheme in the concerned state or Union territory".In reply to a question by MP Girdhari Yadav in the Lok Sabha, Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, said in a written reply that the ministry issued a notification on March 2, 2026, with a view to further streamline and strengthen implementation of the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022. Under the scheme, a fixed sum of Rs 2 lakh is to be provided in case of death, and a fixed sum of Rs 50,000 is to be provided in case of grievous hurt in instances of hit and run road accidents. In reply to another question, the minister provided details of hit-and-run cases in five years — 2020 to 2024 — in all states and Union territories. According to details provided in the written reply, in 2020, 53,623 instances of hit-runs were reported in the country, with 57,415 in 2021, 67,387 in 2022, 68,783 in 2023 and 68,584 in 2024. Gujarat was 11th in the number of hit and run cases behind Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
