Gambling raids: Four held for IPL betting

AHMEDABAD: City police on Saturday night booked four persons in Vadaj and Sabarmati areas for accepting bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 matches.


In the first case, Vadaj police raided Vishwa Vijay flat in New Vadaj area where an accused, Bhavesh Patel, a resident of

Naroda

, along with two others — Kalpesh Patel, who is also a resident of Naroda, and Krunal Patel, a resident of Nikol — were nabbed while accepting bets on an IPL match.

Vadaj police officials said that Bhavesh had taken the flat in New Vadaj on rent from where he was operating the

betting

network. He and others were accepting bets on sessions of the match, said the FIR. Vadaj police seized articles worth Rs 87,000, including three cellphones, a TV along with set-top box and a two-wheeler, used by Bhavesh.

According to the FIR, the trio was taking bets using a mobile application on their cellphones.

In another case, Sabarmati police raided a house in Sanskriti Residency in Kaligam and nabbed a man, Yogesh Dube, while accepting bets on an IPL match. Police seized articles worth Rs 83,000 in the case which included two cellphones, a TV and a set-top box. Dube was accepting bets through phone calls and messages.

The raids occurred at a time when the city police proposed to include online betting and gambling under the ambit of gambling law.
