Ahmedabad: In blazing summer conditions, traffic police personnel face an occupational hazard. They have no option but to remain outdoor, regardless of the extreme temperature and do their duty to citizens. One of their own, a former IPS officer, has come to their rescue.
K Nityanandam has taken the initiative to supply bottles of cold water to traffic personnel since April and hopes to continue doing so, throughout the sweltering summer.
Every day since April, he distributes approximately 125 bottles of water to the traffic police officers across the city, at a monthly approximate cost of Rs 15,000.
"I feel sympathetic towards my fellow officers who are at their stations despite the harsh weather, doing their duty and serving the nation. I am fortunate to be financially sound and this is the least I can do for the people who so diligently do their duty."
"When the heat is unbearable, especially on days when the temperatures go as high as 42 degrees, these officers don't have the privilege of retreating indoors, and I think this is the smallest way I can thank them for what they are doing", he said.
He motives are purely altruistic and rose from first-hand experience in the field. He says he has no aspirations of being an example, and simply does this on humanitarian principle.
