AHMEDABAD: The forest department had a tough time rescuing a deer that locked itself up in an ATM booth in Dhari.

A video of the same has gone viral. A team of forest officials from Amreli was called in but the rescue turned out to be quite a task.

“Though the officials had to only open the door, the deer got so agitated seeing humans that it began jumping up and down and running inside the booth. We feared it could break the glass and injure itself,” said a source from the department.

Sources in the department said the deer entered the ATM booth on Friday night after the security guard left its door open. This was probably the first such incident of its kind.

The officials said that since the booth was located in the vicinity of a sanctuary, many ungulates strayed into the area. Dhari, which falls under the Greater Gir area, also has a sizeable population of lions.

According to the 2020 census, Savarkundla, Liliya and the adjoining areas of Amreli are home to 98 lions; the number was 80 in 2015.
