Ahmedabad: With the BJP securing a sweeping victory in the 2026 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, all eyes are now on Tuesday’s general board meeting where the city’s new mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee chairman will be elected.The BJP won 160 of the 192 seats across 48 wards in the AMC polls, the party’s fifth consecutive victory in the civic body.The mayor’s post, reserved for a male OBC corporator for the next two-and-a-half years, has sparked intense lobbying within the party. Leading contenders include Hitesh Barot, corporator from Thaltej ward and former chairman of the standing committee, and Dharamshi Desai from Bodakdev ward. Jashubhai Thakor from Shahibaug ward and Rajesh Thakor from Vejalpur ward are also in the race.A woman corporator is likely to be chosen as deputy mayor.Meanwhile, 21 BJP corporators have filed nominations for the standing committee, from which 12 members will be selected. The remaining nine are expected to withdraw their nominations.Among the frontrunners for the standing committee chairman’s post are Jainik Vakil from Paldi ward, Ketan Patel from Gota ward, Pravin Patel from Ghatlodia ward, Rakesh Parikh from Stadium ward and Paresh Lakhani from Nikol ward.
