Ahmedabad/New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet on Saturday against 10 alleged D-Company men. The NIA says in the chargesheet that the accused had been identified on the basis of their religion and "they were offered handsome money and jobs in South Africa".
D-Company bosses, NIA says, also asked its recruits in India to throw petrol bombs and indulge in arson in churches. Sources said the motive was to create communal tension.
The accused are: Abid Patel (brother of Dawood's close aide Javed Patel alias Chikna who is based in Pakistan), Saiyed Imran, Zuheb Ansari, Inayat Patel, Mohmad Yunus, Haider Ali, Nissarbhai Sheikh, Mohsin Khan Pathan, Mohmed Altaf Shaikh and Abdul Salim Ghanchi.
A source said the agency is likely to file a supplementary charge sheet shortly. "There is strong possibility that Chota Shakeel (the right-hand man of Dawood Ibrahim) was directly involved in handling such terror modules across India," the source said.
The chargesheet accuses them of being part of a "larger conspiracy" to attack Hindu leaders. Former BJP chief of Bharuch Shirish Bangali and BJP youth wing leader Pragnesh Mistry were gunned down last year as part of this conspiracy.
In its chargesheet, details of which have been exclusively accessed by TOI, NIA states: "D-Company, through Javed Chikna planned to target Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal leaders who were active in the Gujarat riots of 2002 and who are generally vocal and perceived to be anti-Muslim."
"As part of the plan, Javed Chikna (based in Pakistan) and another senior member of D-Company (based in South Africa) Zahid Miyan alias Jao contacted several of their men including Chikna's brother Abid Patel and Yunus (also called Manjrao) and asked them to prepare a list of such leaders," NIA says.
Apart from Abid and Younus, the two mastermind - Chikna and Jao - contacted several other known men in Bharuch and Surat to join this mega conspiracy.
Rs 50 lakh and arms were arranged by Javed Chikna in Mumbai and Surat. For the first killings - of Mistry and Bangali - the accused were paid Rs 5 lakh out of this money.
Abid arranged for two SIM cards from Uttar Pradesh on fake documents and gave them to Inayat Patel to contact his brother Javed Chikna in Pakistan. "They contacted Javed Chikna on two numbers - a Pakistani number and another UAE number and took regular directions from him," said an NIA officer.
A source said that at the time, Javed Chikna was with Chhota Shakeel. The numbers apparently established the D-Company link to the double murders. After the murders, when Abid fled to Nepal and was later arrested on Indo-Nepal border by the Gujarat ATS.
