Ahmedabad Rural Police hold NDPS Act workshop for officers

AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad Rural Police, in collaboration with Sambhav Initiative, organised a one-day training workshop for police officers on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act from a judicial perspective on Sunday at Shela in Ahmedabad.

Justice Mr Shah, former judge of the Supreme Court of India, and Justice Dr Ashokkumar Joshi, former judge of the Gujarat High Court and chairman of the Gujarat Public Works Contract Disputes Arbitration Tribunal, delivered detailed sessions on the judicial interpretation of the NDPS Act and the importance of strict procedural compliance during investigations.

During their addresses, the justices highlighted that the NDPS Act is one of the most stringent laws in the criminal justice system and emphasised the need for meticulous investigation, proper documentation, and adherence to procedural safeguards such as search, seizure, sampling, and chain of custody to ensure cases withstand judicial scrutiny and lead to successful convictions.

The workshop also featured special addresses by Praveen Sinha, former special director of the CBI and former deputy national security adviser, and Sunil Joshi, DIG of the Gujarat ATS, who shared insights and operational experiences in combating narcotics trafficking and organised criminal networks.

Om Prakash Jat, SP of Ahmedabad Rural, emphasised that drug trafficking poses a serious threat to society and highlighted the importance of strong, legally sustainable investigations under the NDPS Act to ensure effective prosecution of offenders and to protect society from the devastating impact of narcotics.
