Ahmedabad: In death, Class 12 student gives new lease of life to 6

Ahmedabad: A freak accident involving a nilgai (blue bull) claimed the life of 17-year-old Krish Akbari, a resident of the Science City area, on March 31. Despite his tragic passing, the Class 12 science student saved multiple lives after his parents decided to donate his heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, corneas, and hands.The tragedy occurred on Tuesday near Divine Road when Krish was on his way to his biology tuition around 5.15pm. Witnesses reported that a nilgai, startled by honking from a truck on the opposite side of the road, jumped and landed directly onto Krish. The impact resulted in severe head and facial injuries. He was rushed to a private hospital and operated on to stabilise his vitals, MRI reports confirmed permanent brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. After two apnoea tests returned positive, doctors declared him brain-dead.His father, Ravi Akbari, and his mother, Hemangi, shared that Krish had aspired to follow in his father's footsteps and become a physiotherapist.In an emotional post circulated in the medical circles, the Akbaris said, "By the time he was taken in an ambulance, he had already lost blood, and his pulse had dropped. He was operated on to stop bleeding and bring the pulse back. He was put on ventilatory support. The next day, the vital signs were stable but there was no signal from brain. MRI report indicated that out of three arteries supplying blood to the brain, two were already blocked."His father said, "When doctors informed us there was no chance of recovery, we saw organ donation as an opportunity for our son to live on in others. In fact, when Krish's last rites were being performed, his heart was being transplanted in a 13-year-old boy from Bhavnagar. We saw it as a sign and hope that it may inspire more to donate organs."According to the family, Krish's hands were sent to a boy in Faridabad, his lungs to a youth, and his kidneys to two teenagers, aged 16 and 17. His corneas were transplanted into a patient in the city.The Akbaris further penned, "Krish has left the world after giving so much. He has saved not one, but many lives. We are proud parents."The tragedy has sparked fresh concerns regarding the nilgai menace in urban Ahmedabad. A local social worker, noted that nilgais frequently cause traffic hazards between the SP Ring Road and SG Road. He highlighted a bureaucratic gap, claiming that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) often refers such complaints to the forest department as wildlife matters. "There must be a clear mechanism to address these concerns so we do not lose more citizens to such accidents," he urged.
