AHMEDABAD: Gujarat education department has issued notices to 14
universities
in the state for not implementing reservations in admissions and recruitment. Seeking a detailed report from the universities, the education department sought to know why actions under the Atrocity Act should not be taken against these varsities.
This was after a
Gujarat University senate
member, Ramesh Jadhav, approached
National Commission for Scheduled Castes
complaining that the universities have not implemented the reservation policy. It was alleged that reserved class seats were given to people from the general category.
According to the guidelines of the
University Grant Commission
, if seats of SC or ST categories remain vacant, first preference shall be be given to the particular community. If candidates of the particular community do not seek admission or recruitment, then the seat can be given to members of other reserved categories.
