Mime play organised in Hathras for sanitation awareness

AGRA: In a bid to create awareness about sanitation,

Curtin University

from Australia, Indian Rural Education and Development (

IREAD

) and

BN College

of Architecture, Pune, jointly organised a street play at Lakhnu, a remote village in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.

Talking to TOI, director of IREAD, Sandeep Sharma said the motive behind the street play was to make people of Lakhnu Village aware of the advantages of clean sanitary environs. He said 45 students from

Lakhnu junior school

, Pune University and Curtin University of Australia got together and used mime theatrical technique, with a background of drum beats, to spread the message.

He said, the response of the community was very positive and they all joined raising slogans of "hum apne gaon ko saaf rakhenge".

He said to address sanitation issues in the village, Curtin University, IREAD and BN College of Architecture, Pune have jointly researching and working at Lakhnu village for the last two years and a few projects have been co-designed and co-constructed by involving the villagers.

He said one of the projects undertaken in the village is construction of a safe and accessible public health facility, which was completed by involving the women. A Women's management committee was formed to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the project post-construction.
