AGRA: In yet another murder of a jeweller in UP, 48-year-old Rajesh Kumar Verma, owner of

Shanker Jewellers

in Chota Bazaar, Mainpuri, was

shot dead

by three unidentified

motorcycle-borne youths

on Thursday night.

Verma's killing comes close on the heels of the brutal murder and heist of two jewellers in Mathura on May 15. This is the fourth such attack in the recent months.

According to police, Verma was returning home after closing his shop when he was stopped by the assailants just 40 meters away from his home at about 8.30 PM. The suspects looted jewellery and cash to a tune of Rs 20 lakhs that he was carrying, before shooting him at close range.

Verma was rushed to the hospital by some locals but he was pronounced "brought dead" by the doctors. The murder sparked protests by local residents, who demanded immediate arrest of the suspects. They also prevented the police from taking away the deceased' body but relented after assurance from senior police officials, who promised the arrest of the suspects within 48 hours.

Talking to TOI, SP Rajesh S said that a case has been registered and investigations are on.

As a protest, all shops in Bhogaon area downed their shutters on Friday.
