Agra: A day after the gruesome murder of four members of a family in Etah, police on Tuesday arrested the son, Kamal Singh, for allegedly killing his parents, wife and bride-to-be daughter. Prima facie, the 45-year-old accused, a chemist and father of three, told cops he was under acute financial stress to arrange around Rs 4 lakh ahead of his daughter's wedding in Chandigarh next month, police said. Kamal's 10-year-old son lit the funeral pyre of his grandparents, mother and elder sister on Tuesday, with his other surviving sister next to him.
UP Police in a statement said: "Kamal Singh was caught in neighbour's CCTV entering his two-storey house at Nagla Premi in Kotwali Nagar at 12.40pm and exiting at 1.55pm. His 10-year-old son, who saw the family members lying dead inside, had entered at 2.17pm. The crime took place within the span of one hour and 15 minutes when the accused was inside with the four kin, and no one else entered the premises."
The CCTV footage also revealed bloodstains on Kamal's clothes and shoes as he left home for his medical store in his bike, said police.
DIG (Aligarh range) Prabhakar Chaudhary said, "Those killed were Ganga Singh Shakya, 75 (a cancer patient); his wife, Shyama Devi, 70; daughter-in-law Ratna, 42; and granddaughter Jyoti, 23.
An FIR was earlier lodged under BNS section 103 (1) (murder) on Kamal's complaint. This was before cops scanned the neighbour's CCTV and collected other evidence against the accused."
During questioning, Kamal told police that when his wife had asked for the money for his daughter's wedding preparations, he informed her that it wasn't arranged yet. Soon a heated argument ensued between the husband and wife and in a fit of rage he smashed Ratna's head with a brick, the DIG said.
"When his elderly parents and his daughter tried to stop him, Kamal attacked them with the same brick. The brick was later found in the room.... His minor son informed his neighbours who approached police," the DIG said.
Kamal told police that after returning to his store, he tried to end his life too. He then received a call from his two children, in severe trauma, and he went home to see them.
A special investigation team of six investigators, including DSP-rank officers, has been set up for the case, to ensure a speedy trial "as there is considerable evidence against the accused", the DIG said.
