Agra: Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, on Saturday visited the
Taj Mahal and Agra Fort along with his family, spending nearly one-and-a-half hours at the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Plenkovic was accompanied by his wife, Ana Maslac Plenkovic, and their three children. The Croatian delegation was welcomed by Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Yogendra Upadhyay and chief secretary SP Goyal.
Describing the Taj Mahal as a symbol that transcends time and boundaries, Plenkovic said he hoped its enduring beauty would reflect the growing friendship between India and Croatia.
During the visit, the Croatian prime minister showed keen interest in the intricate calligraphy and pietra dura inlay work on the tombs of emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Tourist guide Nitin Singh informed him that the monument was built using Makrana marble, historically transported by bullock carts.
At Agra Fort, Plenković was briefed at Musamman Burj about Shah Jahan's eight-year confinement there by his son Aurangzeb.
