Agra: A police outpost in-charge in Aligarh has been suspended and booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly accepting a Rs 30,000 bribe from the family of a 14-year-old molestation victim in exchange for registering a case, police said on Saturday.
An inquiry ordered by senior police officials found the allegations against Rohit Kumar Tomar to be prima facie true. A departmental probe has also been initiated.
Police said the complaint was filed by the girl’s father who alleged that she was molested by two men on May 17. The family approached police seeking action, but no FIR was registered immediately. Her father alleged that the outpost in-charge repeatedly called him to the police station and threatened to implicate the family in another case unless Rs 30,000 was paid.
The family allegedly arranged the money and handed it over to the officer. However, despite accepting the bribe, the officer allegedly failed to take action in the case.
Police said the alleged exchange of money was captured on a mobile phone video that later surfaced online and was examined during the inquiry. Following the probe, senior superintendent of police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun ordered Tomar’s suspension on Friday.
SHO Upender Kumar said, “A case under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Tomar. Further investigation is underway and action will be taken accordingly.”
