AGRA: A 20-year-old engineering student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on the campus on Monday night, moments after telling her father on a video call in Saudi Arabia that she was ending her life. After the conversation, in a desperate bid to stop her, the father sent someone in Aligarh who after alerting the AMU officials and security guards, broke into the room, but couldn't save her.
AMU proctor Mohammad Waseem Ali said on Tuesday, "She was a bright student. Her father is currently working abroad. No suicide note was found in the room, which has now been sealed. She was alone at that time. An official inquiry is being conducted."
An AMU official, requesting anonymity, said the final-year student, who was pursuing a diploma in computer science engineering, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room and rushed to JN Medical College in a critical condition, where she died. She was from Azamgarh and was staying in the varsity's SN Hall.
Moments before it all happened, on her father's SOS, a local in Aligarh alerted the security at AMU gate.
They ran to the student's room after informing AMU officials. The hostel administration and proctorial team reached her room as well. She was quickly taken to the hospital where attempts were made to save her for about three hours. She died around 10:30pm.
Civil Lines SHO Vinod Kumar said, "Preliminary investigation points to a family dispute. The body was handed over to her family after the postmortem. No formal police complaint has been filed so far. An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic incident."
This was the second suicide case at AMU in three months. On Oct 25, an 18-year-old second-year BA political science student of the varsity's Women's College was found hanging in her hostel room. She was from Agwanpur in Moradabad's Civil Lines area and was staying in Mumtaz Hostel.
