AGRA: A day after
BJP MP Satish Gautam sat on a fast at an Ambedkar statue in Aligarh,
Congress workers on Friday washed the statue with milk in a bid to “purify” it.
The incident comes after BJP Yuva Morcha and members of Vaishya community washed the statue of Akrur Ji Maharaj (founder of the community) after it was garlanded by Aligarh mayor from BSP, Mohd Furkan on Wednesday.
According to Congress workers, BJP, which observed a fast on Thursday to protest against the washout of the recent Parliament session, is guilty of atrocities on Dalits and hence a “purification” of the statue was required.
UP Congress Working Committee member Gaurang Dev Chauhan said that they washed the statue also because Ambedkar Jayanti was approaching and BJP members had “polluted” the area by observing their one-day fast here.
When contacted for his reaction on BJP workers washing the statue of Akrur Ji Maharaj, Aligarh mayor Mohd Furkan said he was invited to the function by the members of the community. “I don’t know what they did after that. I don’t want to indulge in dirty politics,” he said.
General secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha in Aligarh, Vinay Varshney said that the mayor’s presence was not needed at the function and they had washed the statue as it had become “impure”.
