Bareilly: Three years after a 23-year-old law student disappeared mysteriously in Bareilly, UP Police on Tuesday arrested a lawyer, Gaurav Kumar Singh (35), a resident of Bareilly, for allegedly murdering the woman by pushing her alive into the Ramganga river from a bridge. The lawyer’s accomplice, Yash Sahu, is on the run.
A senior police officer said accused Singh was having a relationship with the victim. He sexually exploited her by promising to help her clear the judicial examination. She also underwent abortion twice. Later, the accused married a different girl.
“Fearing that his secret would be revealed before her wife, he hatched a plan to eliminate the law student as she was repetitively trying to get in touch with him,” the officer added.
“On Aug 5, 2023, the accused called the victim and asked her to meet him on the pretext of discussing some important matter. He and Sahu took the woman to the bridge across the Ramganga and pushed her into the river. The body was never recovered,” investigative officer Indresh Kumar told TOI.
Following a complaint by the victim’s mother, an FIR was registered two days after the victim had gone missing on Aug 5, 2023, under IPC section 366 (kidnapping, abducting, or inducing of a woman to compel her marriage or cause her defilement) at Kotwali police station, said SSP Anurag Arya.
“Subsequently, IPC section 302 (murder) and a section of disappearing evidence was added to the case. The accused has been arrested and was produced before the court. Efforts are on to nab the other accused,” Arya added.
