Tripura

government has said the area where a Shiva temple has been proposed to be built in Phuldungsei village at Thaidowr Tlang is part of the state and that there was “no question of any land dispute”.

In a letter to deputy secretary (home) Mizoram David

H Lalthangliana

on Saturday, additional secretary of Tripura (home) A K Bhattacharjee said, “Kindly direct the district magistrate, Mamit, to rectify and withdraw his order immediately as these areas mentioned in the prohibitory order area are under the administrative control of North Tripura district since creation of state of Tripura.”

To prevent the movement of people in Phuldungsei, the Mamit district administration of Mizoram has imposed Section 144 of CrPC in the bordering villages and has asked the Tripura government to stop the attempt to construct any temple until the land dispute is settled.

A Tripura-based Hindu group Songrongma has announced plans to build a Shiva temple at Betlingcchip (the highest peak of Tripura) at Thaidowr Tlang. The community construction work for the temple was proposed to be held on October 19-20, which enraged the Christian community in the area.

The Jampui Mizo Convention, a socio-religious body, has called for a shutdown on both days. The decision has upset the Tripura government.

According to Tripura administration, Phuldungsei falls under the Sabual village committee of Jampui Hills RD Block in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district. The administration said the state government had long ago built the ‘watch tower’ at the peak of Betlingchhip under the department of Tourism and it has been an important tourist destination of Tripura.
