AGARTALA: The

Tripura

government has extended the Covid curfew till June 5, following a surge in cases. Shops selling essentials can be open from 6 am to 12 noon.

Except for emergency services, all government offices will remain closed during the curfew period. The

council of ministers

in a meeting on Tuesday decided to provide one-time cash assistance of Rs 1,000 to each of the seven lakh families out of the total 9.29 lakh.

The curfew was supposed to end on Wednesday morning. However, the inter-district movement of people and vehicles has been lifted from Wednesday with certain restrictions, said government spokesperson Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday. Besides, announcing containment zones in three

AMC

wards, the state government had imposed Covid curfew in the capital city on May 17 last and restricted inter-district movement from May 20.

"The restrictions have yielded an impact and rate of infection reduced in five days from 7.55% to 5.93% along with the cases of fatality. Considering the trend, the state government has decided to continue the curfew for 10 more days even though it was not intended to," Nath stated.

He stated though Covid situation across the country including Tripura has a sign of improvement but not controlled. However, there is an apprehension that the rate of infection might increase further across the

Northeast

. Therefore, there is no other option but to continue the restrictions for savings of life, Nath added.
