AGARTALA: The Chairman of Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), Retired Colonel Kush Kumar Sharma, was detained on Sunday night for causing trouble with his son while inebriated and interfering with on-duty police officers in a hotel in the city where 2nd Tripura Diaspora Summit was being held.
He was then released on a personal bond early in the morning after undergoing appropriate medical checks. Colonel Sharma is accused of abusing Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury when his security personnel asked him to relocate his vehicle to make passage for the convoy.
Both the father and son, as well as Colonel Sharma's wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law, allegedly threatened the police with dire consequences, prompting IGP (Intelligence) Krishnendu Chakaravoti, SP (West) Namit Pathak, and OC (West Agartala PS) Rana Chatterjee to rush to the scene to control the situation.
According to police, Colonel Sharma's son was found half-dressed and abusing Minister Chowdhury and the people of Tripura using foul words. The incident occurred about 11 p.m., while Minister Chowdhury was leaving the hotel after attending the summit.
Colonel Sharma’s driver parked his vehicle at the hotel's entrance, obstructing the minister's convoy. He reportedly refused to relocate the vehicle when the minister's driver asked him to do so, escalating the argument.
As the situation turned tense, the minister interfered in an attempt to calm the situation, but the TPSC Chairman allegedly questioned the minister's identity.
Colonel Sharma and his intoxicated son got into a physical altercation with the minister's security personnel. Two cars purportedly belonging to TPSC Chairman's family proceeded to block the exit, temporarily stranding the minister at the hotel entrance.
Later, top police officers reached the spot and arrest TPSC chairman and his son. Colonel Kush Kumar Sharma has been the chairman of TPSC since July 2023, after retiring from Indian Army.
Colonel Sharma was accused of disrespecting a former high court judge during an earlier encounter. Following his nomination as Chairman, the relationship between the state government and the TPSC has become strained, apparently due to his arrogance and ignorance of civil administration, said a senior officer in the state government.
