Agartala: The Tripura Congress is heading for a serious crisis following a showcause notice served on senior party legislator and former CLP leader Sudip Roy Barman by the AICC last week.
After Roy Barman's resignation from the CLP leadership over Congress's understanding with the CPM in West Bengal, the AICC on Monday appointed senior Congress legislator Gopal Roy as the leader of the CLP in the assembly.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Birajit Sinha informed the speaker about the CLP leader's appointment.
On Tuesday, six of 10 Congress MLAs, led by Sudip Roy Barman, wrote a letter to the speaker that TPCC president Sinha had recommended Gopal Roy's name as the CLP leader without consulting them. "We cannot accept Gopal as our leader in the assembly and his selection was unitarily done by the PCC president without consulting us," the six MLAs said in their letter to the speaker. They requested the speaker not to accept his appointment as leader of the opposition.
Besides Roy Barman, five other MLAs - Ashis Saha, Jiten Sarkar, Pranajit Singha Roy, Diba Chandra Hrankhwal and Biswa Bandhu Sen - have signed the letter against the nomination of Gopal Roy.
PCC president Birajit Sinha said, "Appointment of the CLP leader has been done by the AICC and if there is any dispute, they should have informed it to the AICC. Without doing this, they moved the speaker, which is also not proper on their part."
Roy, a four-time MLA from the prestigious Banamalipur assembly constituency of Agartala, has been a strong aspirant of the post for many years.
