Divyang woman wins nat’l award, makes Tripura proud

Agartala: Nirmala Sinha, a 52-year-old divyang from Barasurma village in Tripura’s Dhalai district, has been chosen for the Sant Kabir and National Handloom Award 2023 for her exceptional contributions to handloom development.
The ministry of textiles will honor her alongside 16 other talented individuals from various regions of India on August 7, in celebration of National Handloom Day. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding weavers who have played a significant role in preserving the handloom heritage and sharing knowledge about traditional skills and designs.
According to officials, Nirmala has showcased remarkable skill and dedication in weaving the traditional Manipuri attire, Enaphi, using natural dyes. She has overcome numerous obstacles over the past 35 years while practising her craft. “Enaphi is a traditional Manipuri dress, a vibrant and attractive piece similar to a shawl or dupatta, used by women to cover the upper part of the body. I weave it using natural dyes on our traditional cloths, employing all traditional methods," Nirmala explained.
Nirmala’s love for weaving originated in her childhood, influenced by her mother and grandmother, who were also skilled in the craft. “As a child, I used to help them, and since then, weaving has been a part of my life,” Nirmala recalled. “Despite being a divyang, I work independently without seeking assistance from others. I feel very proud that my dedication and sincerity have been recognized,” she said.
Nirmala resides with her mother, four brothers, and three sisters.
