Agartala: Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman wrote to the chief election officer (CEO) of Tripura on Saturday seeking repolling at 579 booths in the Tripura West constituency, alleging false and proxy voting. The constituency went to polls on April 19 in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to CEO Puneet Agrawal, Roybarman wrote, “I had the opportunity to interact with many micro-observers and was shocked to learn that the assistant returning officers of South, Gomati, and Sepahijala segments forced them to change their reports of massive false voting in 400 polling booths, which can be established through an independent inquiry by the Election Commission of India (ECI).”
A day after the election to the West Tripura constituency and bypolls to Ramnagar assembly seat, the Congress and the CPM separately demanded countermanding the elections and holding repolling alleging that the BJP-backed miscreants didn’t allow opposition’s agents at more than 80% of booths.
A sizable number of opposition voters in each of the 30 assembly segments were prevented from voting with the help of the election machinery and security forces. Proxy voting was carried out at most polling stations and several booths had registered higher voting than the actual number of voters, he alleged.
However, the returning officers later refuted the allegations with the explanation that in two particular cases referred to by the CPM, voters from other assembly segments, who were issued election duty certificates, cast their votes at some booths and as a result, the number of votes was higher than the listed voters.
“Innumerable voters were obstructed, refrained from voting and no police or election machinery was available to ensure the protection of voting rights,” Roybarman said .
