Agartala: BJP in Tripura on Tuesday expelled its state vice-president,
Patal Kanya Jamatia, citing “anti-party activities and indiscipline”. The decision came after Jamatia, who was holding the status of a minister of state, floated a new party named Tripura People’s Socialist Party (TPSP) on Monday.
In a statement, the BJP Tripura Pradesh Committee announced, “Patal Kanya Jamatia, vice-president of the
Bharatiya Janata Party Tripura Pradesh, has been expelled from the party’s primary membership due to anti-party activities and indiscipline.”
The expulsion order, signed by general secretary of the party’s unit, Amit Rakshit, under the instructions of the state president, took effect immediately.
However, Jamatia defended her actions, saying, “If members of the TIPRA Motha Party can contest and win elections under the BJP banner, then I too have the right to engage with another political platform.”
She said TPSP is an extension of her NGO, the Tripura People’s Front. She was previsouly associated with the royal scion and founder of TIPRA Motha, Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.
However, she later parted ways with Pradyot’s team and joined the BJP through the then chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Union minister of state Pratima Bhowmik, despite strong opposition from senior state BJP leaders. In 2023, Patal Kanya lost in the assembly election, but the party accorded her the status of minister of state and appointed her as chairperson of the Tripura Rehabilitation Plantation Corporation.
