Assam Police take over 3 JMB suspects from Tripura

Agartala: A five-member team of Assam Police on Sunday flew to Guwahati with three suspected Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh (JMB) operatives, including an imam and a teacher who were arrested from the bordering village of Sonamura in Sepahijala district of West Tripura on April 9.
Sources said Sonamura chief judicial magistrate on Saturday ordered transit remand for the three men after scrutinising the case diary of Assam police and prima facie evidence of their involvement in anti-national activities.
Tripura police had detained Imran Hossain (24), am imam of a local mosque, Abul Kashem (33), a teacher and Hamid Ali (38), a farmer of Khaidyakhala village under Jatrapur police station area on April 3 based on the input of Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB). Later, they were booked under several non-bailable sections accusing them of being involved in anti-national activities.
Based on the police claim, the court had initially sent them to jail for three days. But later, the police couldn’t produce any evidence to prove their link with JMB and failed to justify the slapping of 120(B), 121, 124(a) of IPC and sections 13(2), 18, 18(b), 38 and 39 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on them. As a result, the court granted them bail on April 8 and asked them to report at Jatrapur police station every alternate day.
The next day, Assam police arrested them in connection with a sedition case registered with Jogighopa police station of Bongaigaon. They were produced before the court seeking transit remand to Assam but the plea was turned down. Instead the court summoned police to submit a case diary and evidence of their claim on April 16 after the counsel of the accused persons claimed it was “intentional and harassment on religious ground”.
Accordingly, the trio was produced before the court on Saturday and after hearing the submissions of both sides, the court allowed the prayer of Assam police for transit remand. The court directed Assam police to produce the three suspects before Abhaypur sub divisional judicial magistrate in Bongaigaon district on Monday.
