3 held for trying to 'smuggle' Ugandan woman to B'desh

A local court in Sepahijala district on Monday remanded three accused of an international woman trafficking racket in three days' police custody. The three were arrested on Sunday following an investigation after the detention of a 27-year-old Ugandan woman on May 6.

AGARTALA: A local court in Sepahijala district on Monday remanded three accused of an international woman trafficking racket in three days' police custody. The three were arrested on Sunday following an investigation after the detention of a 27-year-old Ugandan woman on May 6.
A special investigation team was formed under additional SP (Sepahijala) Manabendra Chowdhury.

Police said Arabul Rahman, Yiddish Mia and Maman Mia hail from Raghurampur locality of Bishalgarh in the district. The gang had allegedly attempted to traffic the woman to Bangladesh on May 4. The woman was brought from Agartala railway station and kept captive at Bishalgarh by the gang.
However, she managed to escape from their clutches and sought refuge at Bishalgarh police station. Her bag containing her passport, mobile and other documents was in the custody of the traffickers. Because of the language barrier, she couldn't explain the incident but based on her mobile call records, the police could trace the gang.
The police also recovered the bag of the Ugandan woman identified as Babra Nawaeisi along with the Maruti car used in transporting the victim from Agartala to Bishalgarh. She was brought here by train from central India with the promise of a job and the gang members arranged to her pick her up from the station, the police.
The investigation revealed that as soon as the vehicle reached the spot near the Indo-Bangladesh border, she smelled a rat and started running leaving behind all belongings but the phone.
