JLR cyberattack: Tata Motors unit says operations severely hit; no customer data stolen
Jaguar Land Rover, the Tata Motors-owned luxury automaker, said on Tuesday its global retail and production operations have been “severely disrupted” following a cyberattack, forcing the company to shut down systems as a precaution. The UK-based company said it took immediate steps to shut down its systems in a bid to limit the fallout, AFP reported. “At this stage there is no evidence any customer data has been stolen but our retail and production activities have been severely disrupted,” JLR said in a statement, adding that it is “working at pace” to restart global operations.Luxury retailers and auto brands have become frequent targets of cyber gangs. Marks and Spencer was recently hit by an attack that crippled its online services for weeks and cost the retailer £300 million ($402 million). High-end department store Harrods and food chain Co-op have also faced cyber intrusions in recent months. The attack comes as another setback for JLR, which has been grappling with weakened demand and trade headwinds. In April, the automaker halted exports to the United States in response to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, leading to a sharp fall in sales.
In July, the company said it would cut up to 500 UK management jobs to reduce costs. While a subsequent trade pact between London and Washington reduced the tariff on UK car exports to 10% from 27.5%, the relief applies only to a quota of 100,000 vehicles annually, leaving JLR with limited scope to recover volumes.
