Veg, non-veg thalis get costlier in November: Report
NEW DELHI: Vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali prices emerged costlier month-on-month in November as onion and tomato prices rose sharply, according to ratings agency Crisil's roti rice rate index.
The data showed the cost of home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis increased 10% and 5% month-on-month respectively. The uptick was attributable to a substantial 58% and 35% month-on-month increase in onion and tomato prices, respectively, prompted by festive demand and lower output in the kharif season due to erratic rainfall.
Cost of a non-vegetarian thali increased at a slower pace than that of a vegetarian thali because of a marginal 1-3% decline in prices of broilers, which account for 50% of a non-vegetarian thali's cost. Cost of a vegetarian thali rose 9% year-on-year, driven by a 93% and 15% increase in onion and tomato prices, respectively. Prices of pulses, which account for 9% of a veg thali cost, also increased 21% year-on-year.
