Boris Johnson's 'desi' cabinet

The United Kingdom's new Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed three Indian-origin leaders in his top ministerial team. While Priti Patel has been named as the home secretary, Alok Sharma has been appointed as the international development secretary and Rishi Sunak as the chief secretary to the Treasury.

Rishi Sunak: Chief secretary to the treasury of UK

Rishi Sunak, son-in-law of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, has been appointed to Johnson's cabinet as the chief secretary to the treasury. Sunak was elected as the MP for Richmond in North Yorkshire in 2015 and re-elected in 2017. He was parliamentary private secretary at the department for business, energy and industrial strategy from June 2017 and parliamentary under-secretary of state at the ministry of housing, communities and local government from January 9, 2018. Sunak was inducted into the UK government last year by the then Prime Minister Theresa May.

Rishi Sunak's profile

The UK-born son of a pharmacist mother and a national health service (NHS) general practitioner father, Rishi, is an Oxford University and Stanford graduate. He co-founded a GBP (British pound) 1-billion global investment firm and specialised in investing in small British businesses before his entry to the British parliament in the 2015 general election.

4/10

Rishi's family life

Rishi Sunak is married to NR Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty's daughter Akshata. Rishi and Akshata have two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka.

5/10

Murthys laud son-in-law

The Murthys are delighted at their son-in-law's appointment to the British cabinet. Narayana Murthy said their advice to their children has been to work hard, be honest and do good for the society. While, his wife Sudha Murthy said that she had sent Rishi an email that god has given him an opportunity to empower people, help and uplift the needy.

6/10

Priti Patel: Home secretary

Priti Patel -- appointed as the home secretary in Johnson's cabinet -- will be in charge of UK's security, immigration and visa policies.

7/10

Patel's political comeback

Patel resigned as international development minister in November 2017 over undisclosed meetings with Israeli officials that breached diplomatic protocol. She released a report on the British economy arguing for lower taxes and for a new Bank of England mandate more focused on asset price inflation and financial imbalances.

8/10

The rising star

Priti Patel is English-born to Indian parents. In the EU referendum campaign she launched an appeal to "Save the British Curry" which argued that a post-Brexit immigration system would be fairer to those from outside the EU and ease a shortage of chefs for Indian restaurants in Britain.

9/10

Alok Sharma: International development secretary

The 51-year-old Conservative Party MP, Alok Sharma, who was serving as employment minister has been promoted to a full-fledged cabinet post in the department for international development (DfID), where he will be in charge of the UK's aid budget and partnerships.

10/10

Elevated role for Sharma

India-born Alok Sharma backed Johnson in the Conservative Party leadership contest as the leader best placed to launch a “coherent unambiguous plan to deliver Brexit and take UK out of the European Union.”
