MUMBAI: The recent announcement by BSNL, that all new connections will come bundled with broadband internet, is set to open up new avenues for the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) industry. High-speed net connection is a pre-requisite for IPTV, where users get digital TV signals (voice, data and video) through their landline, instead of the regular cable lines.
This move should bring broadband to the entire 33.58 million wireline subscribers. This would also mean that IPTV services will soon be available in tier-2 cities and rural areas, said A S Oberai, executive director, IOL Broadband. BSNL already has a deal with IOL Broadband for launching these services in 59 more cities. Similarly MTNL, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, is targeting 50,000 IPTV subscribers by end 2008. It will be increasing its channels to 100 in a month. At present, MTNL has 225,000 broadband lines out of a total of 4.5 million fixed line subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai. In addition to this most major telecom providers such as Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel, Tata Tele and HFCL Infotel, have announced plans to launch IPTV services early next year.
