Stock market today:
Nifty50 and
BSE Sensex, the Indian equity benchmark indices, tanked in trade on Tuesday as foreign fund withdrawals continued and the rupee hit new historic lows versus the US dollar.
The BSE Sensex, comprising 30 shares, decreased by 533.50 points or 0.63 per cent, closing at 84,679.86. During trading hours, it fell by 592.75 points or 0.69 per cent to 84,620.61. The NSE Nifty, with 50 shares, reduced by 167.20 points or 0.64 per cent to 25,860.10.
Among Sensex companies, Axis Bank recorded the steepest fall of 5.03 per cent. Other top losers included Eternal, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement and Bajaj Finance.
In contrast, Titan, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra and Asian Paints were the top gainers.
Asian markets displayed widespread decline, with South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, Shanghai's SSE Composite, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng all closing lower. European markets showed varied performance, whilst US markets closed negatively on Monday.
FIIs sold equities worth Rs 1,468.32 crore on Monday, while DIIs purchased stocks valued at Rs 1,792.25 crore, as per exchange data.
"Continued INR weakness to fresh record lows, driven by persistent FII outflows and subdued global sentiments, dragged domestic markets into negative territory," stated Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
Brent crude prices decreased by 1.54 per cent to USD 59.63 per barrel. The previous day, Monday, saw the Sensex decline by 54.30 points or 0.06 per cent to 85,213.36, whilst the Nifty decreased by 19.65 points or 0.08 per cent to 26,027.30.
