Kapur family trust row escalates: Priya Kapur removes Rani Kapur as trustee of RK Family Trust

NEW DELHI: The dispute in the family of late businessman Sunjay Kapur over control of assets is intensifying. Days after Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur sought removal of her son’s wife Priya Sachdev Kapur as a trustee of the RK Family Trust, the latter has now struck back, removing her mother-in-law from the trust, citing what she called “breach of fiduciary duties and conduct adverse to the interests of the Trust and its beneficiaries.”



In a legal notice slapped on Rani, Priya said she was sending it in her capacity as a trustee and beneficiary of the RK Family Trust.



“By challenging the very validity of the Trust and seeking to divest the Trust of all its assets, you have disregarded the Trust completely and have set up an interest in the Trust assets wholly inconsistent with the interests of the beneficiaries as well as the Trust Deed, thereby rendering you incapacitated to continue functioning as a Trustee of the Trust,” Priya said in the notice.



She further added, “Accordingly, pursuant to Clause 8.11 of the Trust Deed, you are hereby formally removed as a Trustee of the RK Family Trust, effective tomorrow on March 25, 2026, and consequently, you have no authority, right, or locus to act on behalf of the Trust, to interfere in its administration, participate in any trust meetings/actions, deal with any Trust Properties or possess access in any manner to any Trust documents, data, financial reports etc.”



In her legal notice, Priya alleged that “immediately” after the sudden demise of Sunjay Kapur on June 12 last year, Rani began “acting against the interests of the Trust and its beneficiaries”. Apart from herself, Priya listed the Trust’s beneficiaries as Master Azarias Suri Kapur, and Sunjay’s other children from his previous marriage -- Ms Samaira Kapur and Master Kiaan Kapur.



Priya said that she had issued a cease-and-desist notice to Rani on January 10 this year as the latter had been acting “contrary” to the terms of the Trust Deed. “Despite the issuance of the above-mentioned cease-and-desist notice, you initiated proceedings before the High Court of Delhi… asserting that the Trust is null, void, and unenforceable, while simultaneously claiming exclusive personal ownership over the assets forming part of the Trust. In fact, it is a matter of record that you have sought the nullification of the acts performed in accordance with the Trust since its inception, and restitution of the Trust assets to you in your personal capacity, amongst other reliefs, which are wholly detrimental to the interests of the beneficiaries.”



The matter is now set to intensify with Rani likely to challenge the decision.
