IndiGo selects ex BA chief William Walsh as CEO after Elbers’ resignation
NEW DELHI: Former British Airways CEO William Walsh will take over that role at IndiGo from this Aug. Airline promoter and MD Rahul Bhatia had assumed charge as CEO in the interim after Pieter Elbers’ resignation last month with immediate effect. Elbers, then KLM president and CEO of KLM, was brought to IndiGo about four years back to expand its international footprint. While that happened substantially, following the airline’s schedule collapse last Dec which “should never have taken place” in Bhatia’s words Elbers put in his papers.
Now IndiGo has chosen an industry veteran who can help it expand globally. Walsh, currently the DG of International Air Transport Association (IATA), is a trained pilot who has been the CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways, and then of International Airlines Group which is a holding company that owns these two airlines along with Iberia, Level and Vueling.
Willie began his career in aviation as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979. Choosing a pilot-turned-management heavyweight with CEO experience shows that his focus will be equally on operations and expansion to ensure what happened last Dec never recurs. Willie, as Walsh is popularly known as, will complete his tenure at IATA on July 31, 2026, and is expected to join IndiGo by Aug 3.
A mail sent by Rahul Bhatia to employees to inform them of Wille’s appointment on Tuesday was signed off as kuchh hee dino kaa mehmaan" as CEO. And the one sent on March 10 to announce Elbers’ resignation was signed as “main hoon na.”
On his appointment Bhatia said: “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo. He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.”
Walsh said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change. I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the organisation to build a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration and sustainable value for all stakeholders.”
The airline says Walsh will be “responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the airline with a focus on transformational initiatives to strengthen the operational performance, advance the company’s network and commercial strategy while enhancing customer experience. He will work closely with the board and the leadership team to rightfully position IndiGo as it scales up to the next phase of its growth.”
