Axis Bank partners Google Pay to launch UPI credit card
MUMBAI: Axis Bank and Google Pay on Dec 17 launched the Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card, billed as India’s first fully digital, UPI-powered co-branded credit card. The card runs on the RuPay network and is the first product under Flex by Google Pay, marking Google’s entry into the co-branded credit card space.
The card is designed to integrate credit card usage with UPI-style payments and is fully embedded within the Google Pay app. Users can apply digitally at zero cost, receive the card within minutes, and begin transacting without physical paperwork. Payments can be made across millions of offline merchants and online apps supported by the RuPay network.
Rewards earned on transactions, called Stars, can be redeemed instantly, with 1 Star equal to Rs 1. Users can track spending, pay bills in full, or convert outstanding amounts into EMIs directly through the Google Pay app. Card management features, including block or unblock options and PIN reset, are also available in-app.
Arnika Dixit, president and head – cards, payments and wealth management, Axis Bank, said, “With UPI emerging as the preferred mode of payment, we identified a clear opportunity to co-create a credit offering tailored for the digital-first consumer.” She added, “Seamlessly integrated into the Google Pay app, this card delivers a secure, convenient and rewarding experience that perfectly complements the modern Indian lifestyle.”
Sharath Bulusu, senior director – product management, Google Pay, said, “While digital payments have become ubiquitous in India, transactional credit remains underpenetrated. We built Flex to bridge this gap, simplifying and reimagining the card experience for the next generation of users.” He added that the combination of RuPay’s acceptance network, Axis Bank’s financial expertise, and Google Pay’s platform aims to give users greater control over daily transactions.
Sohini Rajola, executive director growth, NPCI, said, “We remain committed to delivering trusted and seamless digital payment experiences for consumers, and Google Pay Flex Axis Bank Credit Card furthers this mission by making everyday payments smarter.”
The card rollout has begun, with wider availability planned over the coming months. Users can join the waitlist through the Google Pay app.
