Lots of people really hate cockroaches. But here’s something surprising: cockroaches are actually some of the toughest and most important creatures on Earth.

They’ve been around since before the dinosaurs. When dinosaurs went extinct, cockroaches survived! They’ve even gone to space—and yes, they’ve had babies there too. That shows how strong and adaptable they are.

In the movie WALL-E, a lonely robot lives on a ruined Earth, and his only friend is a cockroach. That’s not random—cockroaches are great survivors and can live in very harsh conditions.

But they’re not just survivors—they’re helpful too. Cockroaches are decomposers, which means they help break down dead plants and waste. This helps keep the environment clean and healthy. So even though they look “dirty,” they actually do an important job.

Still, many people are extremely scared of them. There’s even a name for this fear: katsaridaphobia. Scientists say this fear is much bigger than the real danger cockroaches pose.

Sometimes, humans have made a terrible mistake—calling other humans “cockroaches” to insult them. For example, during The Holocaust in Germany and the Rwandan Genocide, such thinking helped justify horrible violence. This shows how dangerous irrational hatred can be.

Scientists like David George Gordon, who wrote The Compleat Cockroach, say that learning more about cockroaches can reduce fear. When you understand something better, it becomes less scary.

In India, scientists have even discovered a new type of cockroach called Neoloboptera peninsularis near Pune. It was always there—we just didn’t notice it before.

Instead of trying to kill cockroaches in cruel ways with harmful sprays, we can:

  • Keep our homes clean so they don’t come in
  • Use safer and kinder ways to manage pests

The big idea is this:
Cockroaches may seem gross, but they are ancient, useful, and incredibly tough. And hating them too much doesn’t really help—it might even harm us more than them.
