Chhetri has been the pillar of the national team for over a decade, after having made his debut way back in 2005. In January 2019, India's premier striker surpassed Argentine great Lionel Messi (65) to become the second highest active international goal scorer and is only behind Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on the overall list. Till the end of December 2019 Chhetri had 72 international goals.

Chhetri, who was named AFC Asian Icon in 2018, also added another feather to his already illustrious career when he went past the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia to become India's most capped international footballer.
