Pottermania has peaked. But a supposed leak is making as much news as the much-awaited book itself. Will it mar the magic? It's amazing to see how much (sic) people inside the company have copies and drafts of the book. Curiosity killed the cat. Who killed curiosity? This is what the hacker who has posted a supposed copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the Net had to say about who dies in the book.
But tomorrow the suspense will be over. Boy wizard Harry Potter will encounter a resurgent Lord Voldemort and find answers to all the major questions in his life. But the long wait to the finale has been marred for many Potter fans who have waited years to find out who dies, who lives and if good defeats evil at the end. An increasing number of spoilers and even a purported pdf file of the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is up for people to see. Author JK Rowling has expressed her dismay at this. "I want the readers... who have grown up with Harry to embark on the last adventure ... without knowing where they are going. There will always be sad individuals who get their kicks from ruining others' fun." High curiosity levels are to be expected. "Other than building a bomb shelter or camping out, invariably you run the risk of hearing about it," Emerson Spartz, founder of leading Potter website mugglenet .com has been quoted as saying. The solution? Finish the lengthy book in a single sitting, he suggests.
That's what diehard Potter fan, student Vikas Rawat, says he will do. Despite an exam coming up, he plans to pick up his copy early and start reading. "I will switch off my cellphone lock my door and finish the book in one go," he says. Despite the unavoidable Net leaks, he's still hopeful the book will hold surprises. "Most of what's leaked isn't true - that happened the last time too." Most city stores have reported 700-1 ,000 pre-orders and are counting. Many plan to open stores at 6am. "We will get the books at 3am," says Zahir Lalliwalla, bookstore owner, who is hiring extra security to guard stocks. Separate queues for Pottermaniacs, extra billing counters and coffee on tap are some extras being thrown in. "We have signed a bond not to sell before 5.30am," he adds. As for fears of spoilers spoiling the show, he says, "It's a huge book and will take hours to upload. I don't think leaks will affect sales." They certainly will not, echoes Hemali Sodhi, marketing head of the Indian publishers of the book. While the publishers refuse to disclose details of the security measures being taken, she says, "It's a fairly comprehensive logistical exercise. And leaks will have no impact on sales. We encountered purported spoilers the last time too. But genuine Potter fans won't be put off." THE BIG QUESTION The biggest question doing the rounds is about Harry himself, and whether he lives or dies. (See box of odds on the Net). According to Potter expert Mark Harris, "Rowling in her interviews has always sounded kind but utterly unsentimental, a great combination for a writer. 'My books are largely about death,' she said last year, adding that when she told her husband she'd killed a character, he shuddered, "Oh, don't do that... " But of course I did.' Why? Because that's her job. Search 'Will Harry Potter die?' and you get 2.7 millions hits. Search 'Will Harry Potter survive?' and you'll get 1.1 million. I don't know if that represents a wish, a consensus or a popular vote, but I do know that most readers are more than willing to shed some tears this summer... " Author Stephen King adds his bit: "My guess is that large numbers of readers will not be satisfied even if Harry survives (I'm betting he will) and Voldemort is vanquished (I'm betting on this too, although evil is never vanquished for long). I'm partly drawing on my own experience... there is sadness, that inevitable parting from characters who have been loved deeply by many... No ending can be right, because it shouldn't be over at all... the magic isn't supposed to go away."
