Beware Cyrus Oshidar if he''s just returned from a meeting. "There are so many people you want to smack," says the creator of MTV''s One Tight Slap, of course not in context of what he''s just been through. The series of promos Oshidar''s created help you relive your annoying, frustrating and maddening moments, all with a happy ending — one tight slap.
He promises that it''s satisfaction guaranteed.
"It was my idea. Most advertising people, essentially copywriters, have a pool of this kind of stuff. We put it down, tuck it away and take it out later," says the vice president, creative, MTV India. While the programme is new, the reasoning behind it is much older, he believes. That there are so many people you want to slap.
Who would fit into the category of his usual suspects? Well, the typical bus driver or the lying politician for example. Oshidar''s personal favourite has been the man talking in a movie hall on his cellphone. "And I''ve just about had it with bus drivers. People today are just getting angrier. Thanks to urban living, we''re fighting for space It takes three years to get a phone connection, not to mention the increasing levels of pollution. Our patience is wearing thin."
This second series of MTV One Tight Slap includes people screaming on their mobiles in a crowded theatre, the irresponsible babu''s and the overzealous salesman trying to sell you everything under the sun. These are people who cheat, waste time or just simply irritate you.
At one level it''s funny, but at another, it''s a serious look at what''s going wrong with our country. "In the future, if we see someone making a fool of himself, we''ll put him them there. Though not as a person, but as a type. It''s pro-social fun and that''s what MTV does. This way, the thought is tucked away into people''s heads, and comes out when it needs to," he adds.
Sometimes Oshidar feels that slapping isn''t the only solution, "because it gets people nowhere. However, our community is getting more violent." But there are other times when a slap can do what nothing else can. As Oshidar puts it, "MTV''s One Tight Slap... sweet revenge and a happy ending everytime. Phataak!"
kanakhirani@indiatimes.com
