No petrol bikes/scooters in Delhi from April 2028? All you need to know
The Delhi Government has proposed a major shift in its upcoming EV policy, which could significantly impact two-wheeler buyers in the capital. According to the draft Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, new registrations of petrol-powered two-wheelers may no longer be allowed from April 1, 2028. Instead, only electric two-wheelers will be eligible for registration from FY29.
The move puts the two-wheeler segment at the centre of Delhi’s electrification plans. This is because bikes and scooters make up the largest share of vehicles on the city’s roads and are seen as a major contributor to pollution due to their high daily usage.
The policy also outlines similar steps for other segments. From January 1, 2027, only electric three-wheelers will be allowed to be newly registered in Delhi.
To support this transition, the government has proposed several incentives. Buyers of electric two-wheelers priced up to Rs 2.25 lakh, ex-showroom, could receive benefits of Rs 10,000 per kWh, capped at Rs 30,000 in the first year. This incentive will reduce to Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year.
Alongside this, the policy also includes a full exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced up to Rs 30 lakh till March 31, 2030, along with plans to expand charging infrastructure across the city.
It is important to note that this is still a draft policy and has not been implemented yet. The government has opened it for public feedback, and changes may be made before it is finalised. If approved in its current form, the rule will apply only to new registrations. Existing petrol two-wheelers are unlikely to be affected.
