Vinfast showcases new Luxury models: BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz S-Class rivals?
Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has debuted in the ultra-luxury space with the unveiling of two new flagship models, the Lac Hong 800S and Lac Hong 900S. The company announced the move in Hanoi as part of a broader restructuring of its automotive portfolio into three clearly defined brand lines.
With these two new additions, VinFast is no longer just focusing on mass-market electric SUVs. It will also compete and go against established luxury heavyweights such as the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The Lac Hong 800S and 900S are positioned as ultra-luxury offerings, scheduled for commercial launch in 2027. They join the flagship 900 LX, including its advanced armored version introduced in 2025.
Design elements include a grille with vertical slats inspired by bamboo and a wing-shaped emblem symbolising the Lac bird. The “Lac Hong” wordmark is finished in genuine gold-plated alloy. Besides, there are also decorative motifs inspired by the Dong Son bronze drum and terraced rice fields.
Inside, the cabins feature Nappa leather, rare woods and gold-plated accents. Both vehicles come equipped with executive seating, automatic power-assisted doors and premium entertainment systems.
The Lac Hong 900S goes even further. It adds a privacy partition between the cockpit and rear cabin, a starlight headliner, a large-format projection entertainment system and a foldable executive workstation for second-row passengers. These are features typically associated with top-tier luxury sedans and chauffeur-driven limousines.
The question is clear. Are these serious rivals to the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class? While the X7 dominates the luxury SUV space and the S-Class remains one of the most exclusive flagship sedans, VinFast is attempting to debut in the segment with its own culture-inspired design and electric performance. The 900S, in particular, appears designed for high-net-worth individuals who value rear-seat comfort, privacy and a premium space.
Whether the Lac Hong 800S and 900S can directly challenge global luxury icons will depend on pricing, global rollout strategy and brand perception. However, the intent is clear. VinFast can no longer be seen only as a mass-market EV player.
