Tesla Model Y Driven

The Tesla Model Y is Tesla’s first product for India and one of the world’s best-selling electric SUVs. It is offered in two variants: Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive.

Prices start from about Rs 59.89 lakh and go up to Rs 67.89 lakh, ex-showroom. We drove the top-spec Long Range version for this review. Here’s what it feels like in the real world.

2/8

Tesla Model Y: Design

The Model Y looks quite different from most SUVs on Indian roads. The smooth surfaces and clean styling give it a typical EV character.

It has a relatively tall stance and crossover-like proportions. Ground clearance is rated at about 167 mm. However, the design is not dramatic. It looks modern but not particularly exciting. Unlike some luxury EVs, it may not turn heads immediately. It feels more functional than emotional.

3/8

Tesla Model Y: Interiors

The cabin follows Tesla’s minimalist philosophy. It feels clean and spacious with plenty of legroom. Storage areas are practical and well designed. Tesla also claims up to 2,138 litres of cargo capacity with seats folded.

There are almost no physical buttons. Most functions are controlled through the screen. This takes time getting used to.

4/8

Tesla Model Y: Screens and features

The highlight is the large 16-inch central touchscreen along with an 8-inch rear display.

Almost every function is operated through this screen. Climate control, drive settings and navigation are all integrated. The interface is very simple and responsive. It is probably among the best infotainment systems in EVs sold in India. Once familiar, it becomes very easy to use.

5/8

Tesla Model Y: Cabin experience

Equipment levels are strong overall. The Model Y gets a panoramic glass roof, powered seats, premium audio and advanced driver assistance features.

Fast charging is supported up to 250 kW under ideal conditions. However, the cabin does not feel as rich as some European EVs. Material quality is decent. But the experience feels more tech-focused than luxurious.

6/8

Tesla Model Y: Powertrain

The Long Range version uses a rear-wheel-drive electric motor setup. Tesla claims 0–100 km/h in about 5.6 seconds with a top speed of around 201 km/h. It makes 340 hp.Performance feels strong. It is quick off the line and smooth to drive. There is enough power for sustained highway speeds. Overtakes feel effortless. It feels fast without being intimidating.

7/8

Tesla Model Y: Driving experience

On straight roads, the Model Y feels stable and planted. High-speed cruising is comfortable and confidence inspiring.

It can handle corners reasonably well too. There is noticeable body roll if pushed hard. This is not a sporty SUV. It feels more like a comfortable long-distance cruiser. Ride quality is acceptable for Indian conditions.

8/8

Tesla Model Y: Range and verdict

In our driving, the Model Y delivered a real-world range of around 500 km on a full charge. The Long Range version uses a battery pack of about 84 kWh and claims up to 661 km (WLTP). The standard version uses a smaller battery and claims about 500 km range. This makes the Model Y practical for both city use and long highway trips.

The Model Y brings strong technology and impressive efficiency to India’s premium EV segment. It is quick, practical and easy to live with. The tech experience is a clear highlight.

But it may not feel as premium as some luxury EV rivals. If you want cutting-edge technology and long range, the Model Y makes a strong case.
