Can India accept an electric sports car? Decoding MG Cyberster sales
India’s electric vehicle market has mostly grown around practical choices. Although we have now seen much more capable cars debuting in the market in the recent couple of years, small city cars and SUVs still dominate the EV space. This is because buyers in this segment focus on range, running costs and everyday usability. But the arrival of the MG Cyberster had introduced a different idea. This is an electric sportscar that promises driving excitement and has a design coming from price brackets segments above. But can a niche electric sports car find buyers in India? Let’s find out.
The Cyberster entered the Indian market in July 2025 with an introductory price of about Rs 72.49 lakh, ex-showroom. Deliveries started soon after through MG’s premium MG Select retail network. Unlike most electric cars on sale in India, the Cyberster is a two-door convertible roadster.
It looks very different from typical EVs. The car features a soft-top convertible roof and dramatic scissor doors. It is also the world’s fastest MG.
Despite being a niche product, the Cyberster has shown encouraging early numbers. The model crossed the 500-unit mark within the first six months after launch. MG says more than 580 units were sold during this period. These figures are small compared to mass-market electric vehicles, but they are notable for a two-seat electric sports car priced above Rs 70 lakh. The numbers suggest that some premium buyers in India are open to electric performance cars.
MG has also tried to keep interest alive through updates. A new Irises Cyan exterior colour has recently been introduced. The Cyberster’s response shows that India’s EV market is slowly expanding beyond basic transportation. Most buyers still prefer practical and affordable electric cars. That trend is unlikely to change soon. But there is clearly a small group of customers willing to explore something more exciting.
The car has attracted interest from celebrities, entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals. Among the owners, there are personalities such as Avdhoot Gupte, Aryaman Sheth, Pooja Dadlani and Shafali Verma.
The Cyberster is not expected to become a high-volume product. That said, electric sports cars may not be common in India yet, but they are no longer unrealistic.
