Tesla's electrifying dive: Musk teases Cybertruck's aquatic capabilities with potential 'boat' package
Elon Musk-led electric vehicle marque Tesla recently launched the much-awaited Cybertruck electric pickup truck as the company delivered the initial batch of the hyped EV in the US. Unveiled as a prototype in 2019, Musk later teased that the EV will have capabilities to serve as a ‘boat’ for a brief period. “Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy,” said Musk in a social media post last year.
The unique electric pickup truck, known for its sharp angles and stainless steel body, might soon be adding a ‘mod package’ that will give it “sea legs” to maneuver through water bodies for at least 100 metres, a report from electrek said.
The Tesla CEO said that the objective is to enable Cybertruck to navigate the water route between SpaceX’s Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas, covering a distance of approximately 360 metres.
In response to a statement by Lars Moravy, Tesla's VP of Engineering, discussing how Cybertruck owners can attach an electric outboard motor to transform the pickup truck into a boat, Musk disclosed that Tesla is developing a mod package for sale.
This package will enable the Cybertruck to travel on water, requiring primarily an upgrade to the cabin door seals. The details for the package haven’t been revealed by the EV maker yet but given the abilities of the EV showcased recently, we can expect that Tesla will leave no stones unturned in its bid to further enhance the capabilities of the electric pickup truck.
The Cybertruck is priced starting at USD 79,990 (approximately Rs 66 lakh) and goes up to USD 99,990 (approximately Rs 83 lakh). As for now, only the twin- and tri-motor variants of the Cybertruck have been launched.
