Simple car checks you can do yourself at home: Tips
Basic car checks can be done at home and help identify issues early, reducing the need for frequent service visits. Simple inspections such as tyre pressure, fluid levels and battery condition can improve performance and prevent costly repairs. These checks require minimal time and no specialised tools, making them practical for daily users. Regular monitoring can also improve safety, fuel efficiency and overall reliability while reducing dependence on service centres. In this article, we take a look at simple car checks you can carry out at home, whether you’re preparing for a long drive or just have some time over the weekend.
Engine oil level
Check engine oil using the dipstick with the car on a level surface and the engine is cooled. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. The oil’s condition should also be noted—clean oil appears lighter, while dark or thick oil may need replacement. Low or degraded oil can affect performance and cause engine damage.
Tyre pressure and condition
Ensure all tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure using a gauge. Inspect for cuts, cracks, bulges and uneven wear, and check tread depth. Poor tyre condition can reduce grip, affect handling and lower fuel efficiency.
Coolant level and Brake fluid
Check the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold. The level should be within the marked range. Low coolant can lead to overheating and possible engine damage, while frequent top-ups may indicate a leak. Brake fluid should be within the specified level in the reservoir. A drop may indicate worn brake components or a leak. Dark or contaminated fluid may require replacement. Any issue with brake fluid should be addressed promptly.
Battery, lights and indicators
Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are secure. Signs such as slow engine cranking or dim lights may indicate a weak battery. Most batteries last three to five years. Check all lights, including headlights, indicators, brake lights and reverse lights, to ensure they are working properly. Faulty lights can affect visibility and safety.
Windshield washer fluid and wiper blades
Ensure the washer fluid reservoir is filled to maintain clear visibility. Using a suitable cleaning solution can improve effectiveness, especially in dusty or rainy conditions. Inspect wiper blades for wear, cracks or reduced effectiveness. Worn blades can leave streaks and affect visibility, especially in rain, and should be replaced when needed.
Air filter
Check the air filter for dirt and debris. A clogged filter can affect engine performance and fuel efficiency. Clean or replace it if necessary. Also, pay attention to unusual noises such as knocking or squealing, and check for fluid leaks under the vehicle. These may indicate underlying mechanical issues.
