Hydrogen Energy Resurfaces as Key Player at CES 2024
While electric vehicles dominate CES 2024 discussions on carbon-neutral technology, hydrogen energy has quietly re-entered the spotlight, courtesy of automotive giants Hyundai and Bosch Mobility.
At the sprawling tech and gadget show in Las Vegas, Hyundai unveiled its strategy for harnessing hydrogen energy. Beyond creating vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the South Korean automaker hinted at ambitions to contribute to a "hydrogen society" by expanding into energy production, storage, and transportation. Jose Munoz, President and Global COO of Hyundai Motor Co., emphasized the technological feasibility and eventual economic viability of such initiatives.
Simultaneously, Bosch Mobility announced plans to launch its inaugural hydrogen combustion engine this year, marking a crucial move in the global effort to reduce man-made carbon emissions.
Both companies cited encouragement from substantial investments, such as the U.S. government's $7 billion commitment to hydrogen infrastructure development.
In other developments at CES 2024:
- Honda introduced the "Saloon" and "Space-Hub," part of its Zero Series concept vehicles, focusing on EV models that are "thin, light, and wise," aiming to minimize battery size and weight.
- Kia showcased a trio of electric vans with modular bodies for versatile use, set to enter production in 2025 in South Korea.
- VinFast, a Vietnamese electric startup, unveiled the VF Wild, an electric truck concept.
- Mercedes-Benz presented updates to its infotainment systems, featuring a new AI-powered virtual assistant integrating functions for automated driving, seating comfort, data displays, and charging.
- Google announced partnerships with automakers such as Nissan, Lincoln, and Porsche to pre-install Google Maps and Assistant in select models, even collaborating with Mercedes-Benz.
- Honda outlined plans for its Zero Series and future EV advancements, highlighting the independent development of solid-state batteries for application by the late 2020s. Solid-state batteries are considered vital for mass commercialization of battery-powered EVs due to their stability and potential for increased power.
These developments underscore the automotive industry's multifaceted approach to innovation, from alternative energy sources to advanced in-car technology ecosystems.
