Yamaha trademarks YZF-R2 in India: KTM RC 200, Karizma XMR rival on the cards?

Yamaha has taken a key step that could hint at an expansion of its sportbike portfolio in India. The company has trademarked the YZF-R2 name in the country, suggesting that a new fully faired motorcycle may be under consideration. While a trademark filing does not confirm a launch, it does signal Yamaha’s intent to secure the nameplate for future use.

The YZF-R2 name fits neatly into Yamaha’s familiar R-series naming strategy. If brought to market, the motorcycle would sit between the R15 and the larger R3. At present, the R15 serves as the brand’s entry-level supersport, while the R3, with its 321cc twin-cylinder engine, sits at a much higher price and performance level.

The R2 is expected to rival motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200, which currently has little direct competition from Yamaha in this segment. The Hero Karizma XMR could also be a potential rival, depending on final positioning and pricing.

Although Yamaha has not shared any technical details, the YZF-R2 is expected to use a single-cylinder engine in the 200–250cc range. A six-speed gearbox is likely, along with hardware such as disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS.

In terms of design, the R2 could feature sharp bodywork, aggressive LED lighting and a sporty riding posture. Features and electronics remain unknown at this stage. For now, Yamaha has made no official announcement, and there are no test sightings to confirm development. The trademark filing, however, keeps the door open for a new KTM RC 200 rival wearing the Yamaha R badge in the future.
