Crash safety: Tips to avoid getting hurt by your car’s airbags
Airbags have become standard in most modern cars in India. From dual front airbags to six and even more airbags, safety equipment has improved rapidly over the past few years. They are designed to save lives. And they do. But what many people do not realise is that an airbag can also cause injuries if you are not seated or positioned properly at the time of a crash. Here’s a look at a few simple tips that can prevent airbag injuries.
Airbags deploy in milliseconds. The speed is extremely high. The force is massive. They are meant to cushion you in a serious impact, but that protection works best only when you follow basic safety rules.
The first and most important rule is simple. Always wear your seat belt. Airbags are designed to work along with seat belts, not replace them. Without a seat belt, your body can be thrown forward at the wrong angle, and the airbag can hit you with excessive force. This can lead to facial injuries, chest impact or even fractures.
Seating position also plays a big role. Drivers should sit upright and maintain a safe distance from the steering wheel. Ideally, there should be at least 10 inches between your chest and the centre of the steering wheel. Sitting too close increases the risk of injury when the airbag deploys. Do not lean forward while driving. Do not slouch.
Hand position matters too. Keep your hands at the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions on the steering wheel. Many drivers still hold the wheel from the top. That is risky. If the airbag deploys, your arms can be pushed back violently towards your face.
For passengers, posture is equally important. Sit straight. Keep your back against the seat. Never place your feet on the dashboard. It may look relaxed, especially on highways, but in a crash it can cause severe leg and hip injuries when the airbag inflates.
Children need special attention. Kids below 12 years of age should ideally sit in the rear seat. Front airbags deploy with considerable force and can be dangerous for smaller occupants. Use an appropriate child seat whenever possible. It makes a difference.
Avoid placing loose objects on the dashboard. In an accident, these items can fly around or interfere with proper airbag deployment. Also, if the airbag warning light stays on, get it checked immediately. A faulty airbag system can fail when you need it the most.
-Wear seat belts: Airbags are dangerous without them.
-Keep distance: Stay at least 10 inches from the steering wheel.
-9 & 3 grip: Keep hands on the sides of the wheel, never the top.
-Sit upright: Don't lean forward or slouch while driving.
-Feet on floor: Never rest feet on the dashboard.
-Kids in back: Children under 12 should always sit in the rear.
-Clear dashboard: Remove loose objects or decorations from the dash.
-Check lights: Fix the airbag warning light immediately if it stays on.
