During a recent visit, model-turned fashion choreographer Achla Sachdev spoke to AT about her life and times. She looks every bit the harried fashion choreographer you'd expect her to be, just minutes before a show. And while she instructs the models on one hand, she finalises the music on the other and co-ordinates with the designers as well. Yet, "I love my work," says Achla Sachdev.
A SUCCESSFUL MODEL: I enjoyed modelling. I quit only because I wanted to do something else I love. Being a model was a great experience - one that helped me as a choreographer. I can understand practical problems faced by the models much better, for instance, and even had a network to start with. It was like bringing my past into my present by utilising my experience. FASHION CHOREOGRAPHY: Choreography was a conscious decision. I made it happen because I thought I'd be good at it. I could have waited, but I chose to switch at the peak of my modelling career, which helped me use my contacts in the circuit . I understand the importance of rhythm in choreography. While some people make models walk up and down the ramp, I try to add a dash of creativity in my sequences, and showcase clothes in the most effective manner. I decide the sequences , expressions, music, decoration, makeup , hair, everything, and call myself a 'show director' . TOUGH TASKMASTER: Besides being a show director, which means that I have to work under a deadline and put up a great show, each time, I'm also a hard taskmaster. But that's only because I'm a perfectionist. I was always very punctual, even as a model, and am very particular about maintaining time. I also encourage a lot of newcomers. THERE'S MORE: It's been eight years now, and I'm still passionate about my work. Although the hours can get very long, and the travelling tiring, there's so much more that I have to do, like bigger, interesting and international shows.
