Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau on Thursday took a swipe at US President
Donald Trump after Canada beat team USA 3-2 in an overtime 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game in Boston, Massachusetts.
In a social media post on X, Trudeau said, "You can't take our country — and you can't take our game."
This comes after US President Donald Trump’s remarks on turning Canada into the "51st state."
Trump has repeatedly made provocative statements about Canada, referring to the country as the “51st state,” labeling Trudeau its “governor,” and even suggesting NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential prime ministerial candidate.
Trump also declared an economic emergency to impose tariffs of 10% on all imports from China and 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada. However, energy imports from Canada—including oil, natural gas, and electricity—would be subject to a reduced 10% tariff.
Trudeau retaliated to Trump's call and announced that Canada would impose 25% tariffs on $106 billion worth US imports.
"Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25% tariffs against Can$155 billion ($106 billion) worth of American goods," he said.
He also urged the Canadians to prevent vacationing in US to fight back over the tariff imposition.
Earlier, Trudeau drew flake for posting about hockey match shortly after a Delta plane incident occurred at Toronto airport, showing insensitivity.
The 53-year-old leader shared content on X about Canada's victory over Finland in the 4 Nations tournament on Monday afternoon and during that time, Delta Flight 4819 crash-landed at Toronto Pearson Airport in severe weather conditions.
The incident, which resulted in minor injuries to 18 passengers, saw all 80 occupants miraculously survived after the aircraft overturned. The cause remains under investigation, Daily Mail reported. Although the authorities handled the situation but PM Trudeau's late acknowledgement pushed him into controversies.
