'No plans for Putin to congratulate,' says Russia as Donald Trump wins US presidential election

The Kremlin on Wednesday responded to questions about the US presidential election and the possible impact of Donald Trump's victory, stating that Russia would "draw conclusions based on concrete words and actions" in the future.

Additionally Kremlin said that "We are unaware of any Putin plans to congratulate Trump on his win."

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is carefully monitoring the situation, adding, "We are of course watching closely and analysing statements made on themes that affect Russia."

When asked about Trump's election win, the Kremlin said that the US election was an "internal US matter" and refused to speculate on Putin’s potential actions.

The Kremlin also addressing the question of whether Trump could play a role in ending the ongoing war in Ukraine, Peskov called it "inappropriate to speculate." He said that Russia’s position on the matter remains firm, with the US continuing to be seen as a "hostile state" actively involved in the Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, Trump has stirred controversy with remarks about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ukraine war. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal in October 2024, Trump recounted a conversation with Putin in which he warned the Russian leader about severe consequences if Russia invaded Ukraine.

Trump claimed he told Putin, "Vladimir, if you go after Ukraine, I’m going to hit you so hard, you’re not even going to believe it. I’m going to hit you right in the middle of fricking Moscow... We’re friends. I don’t want to do it, but I have no choice." Trump’s comments on the matter come as he reiterates his belief that the conflict would not have happened had he been in office.

With Donald Trump's unpredicted stance Peskov commenting on future relations with the US said that Russia would "see" if the US changes its foreign policy trajectory come January, signaling that the Kremlin is waiting for concrete shifts in policy before making any further judgments.

He pointed out that President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said he is "open to dialogue."

The Kremlin also said that while the US could be in a position to help facilitate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, this would not happen overnight. "It cannot be done in one night," Peskov stated.
